Production Schedule for our main task

Unfortunately the computers were down at school which meant we couldn't access our saved work within school nor homes, therefore instead of the times in school me and my group were going to spend using the computers (on blogger)  we decided to meet up and make a production schedule.

As a group we decided it would be best to involve myself and Jess again in the opening sequence like we did in the preliminary task, because we believe it flowed. However, looking at our evaluation from our preliminary task we concluded that it was key to add a male protagonist, therefore we are using Laurence  (Jess' friend) who had an acting experience at GCSE which is a bonus for us as it implies he may find the task more efficient than others who hadn't had the opportunity to study drama.

We created a productin schedule in order to have a routine to follow so we were prepared for the times we needed to be avaiable. We made sure all times listed on the production schedule suited myself, jesss, beth and Luarence (jess' friend), this was important as it allowed us to have a clear understanding of what was happening on each day.

Title for our opening sequence

We decided to make this our title because we believe it is the most effective out of the three we designed this is because we believe the font stands out as it's different to the rest. Therefore it intrigues the audience because of many things such as the colours used in the font, but using the word red in the colour black and vice versa shows a twist which could foreshadow the twist which is going to happen in our opening sequence, which shows the titles effectiveness.

Our alternatives were:

The reason we didn't decided on this title in the final decision is because compared to the other ideas we created it seemed to basic and didn't convey anything. We decided we'd like to convey and be clever in the way we style the title. However, basic isn't always bad as it could suggest the film is classic and therefore has a good representation but in this case we wanted to create a title which was easy to understand and intrigue the audience as much as we could.

We decided against using this as our title because once we came ot the agreement that the title needed colour in it to intrigue audiences. Although, Jess research the ideas behind fonts and she found that dark and bold colours are most effective in these circumstances, In the final decision days we decided against this idea because it could be misinterpreted as an army film therefore giving a false representation which could attract the wrong target audience and we wouldn't want complications especially when they could be avoided.

Representation of characters based on appearance and Representation of female characters

The connation’s of a smart looking protagonist especially a male is that they are going to be a gentlemen for example James Bond he is a gentlemen as he always as a lady yet he always fights his way out of situations. Also, a smart female protagonist connotes intelligence and they usually play a role of a woman who is very intellectual and usually helps the meal protagonist’s especially in action films to save the day. Therefore, smart protagonists are usually the ones who save the day and are known as the ‘goody’ however, films that are unpredictable and have a twist may not always necessarily be the smart protagonists saving the day.

On the other hand rough looking protagonists are usually connoted in a light where they are either poor or in need of help. This is because rough looking protagonist are more often than not portrayed to be living on the streets or in some kind of difficult situation where they are alone and fight themselves out of the situation alone. This contrasts with smart protagonists who are usually stereotyped to have more than an companionship with one person to help when in need of help; however it can twist as some narratives do have a twist.

An  example of a narrative with a twist is a character starts of as a smart protagonists and then becomes a rough look pragmatists is in south paw the main character who is a boxer starts off with everything, the dream house, cars, family, the lot. But then he loses it due to his wife dying and then he has his daughter took off him it end very badly as he ends up with nothing. This is an example of a unpredictable story line with a twist as more often than not boxing type films are the other way round as usually the boxer starts off with nothing more often than not living on the streets and then becomes wealthier as they progress new skills are fights and it usually ends with a happy ending.

An example of female representations in action genre films: 'Salt'
The main character who is known as Angelia Jolie who is first portrayed as mysterious as she is shown as she has been involved in a fight with her black hair and dark clothes. This kind of clothing can suggest both power and weakness as black connotes a very powerful colour that also portrays one of class elegance and wealth. But in this case the black could suggest weakness of the character because she is covered in dust suggesting she has been in trouble implying she is weak which is the stereotype of females in action genre films specially.

As the film goes on Jolie is shown to change in character as she then changes her hair colour to blonde which implies she is now sexualised as she is seen to wear red lipstick, which connotes a powerful emotion of passion, lust, sex, energy, blood and war. Which is stereotypically the norm within action films as the women used are usually dressed provocative and sexualised,  It is a noticeable colour that is often used on caution and warning signs. It is often associated with stop or "beware". Therefore, this could suggest this female character is portrayed to have power and strength unlike most action genre films which suggests this film has used the final girl theory.

Location for our Opening Sequence in our main task

Yesterday, myself and my group collaborated together to make a decision on our film title (previous blog post). Once we had come to the conclusion on our title for our opening sequence we believed it was important to start to think of possible outcomes for our setting/location of our opening sequence- listed below.
Warehouse
We are going to use the settings around the warehouse as we believe as a group it is a good and effective location for our genre. This is because it is a stereotypical mystery setting which links to the genre action, therefore this will help to attract our target audience. In order to use it effectively we could for example have to a character around the building looking suspicious, or a unusual text message of the unknown to build up the tension which is needed in our action genre opening sequence.

Bridge
My group and I feel it would be effective to use a bridge in our opening sequence this is because a bridge is stereo typically were characters in action film go to hide to make a phone call for example. In addition a bridge could led t making the audience feel unsettled as  usually there is lots going on around a bridge for example to bridges on the motorway. However the bridge we are using is in a very quiet surrounding which may lead the audience to fell on edge as they may not know what to think nor what to expect. Therefore we believe using a bridge is effective for many reasons including to cause tension as it’s a familiar setting but with unfamiliar surroundings.

Canal
We have also decided to use a canal which is located in Timperley this is because we think it would be a good idea t have a chase along the canal as it will cause tension for audience as they will be lead on to believe that one of the character’s will get caught as it may lead to a dead end at the end of the path way. Or even more dramatic that one of the characters may fall into the canal. Also canals are known to be dangerous which could foreshadow that our film will be dangerous and intense in the aim that it will intrigue our audience to want to watch more.
Forest
By using a space such as the above implies it’s a big area which could be a good place to hide for example. There is also a narrow stream which could be used to be effective as we could have characters jumping across to cause tension. However, it is unknown where it is possible to do so.

Railway
It is believed that the railway in the picture above will be effective for our opening sequence because it implies to be a mystery and dangerous place to film. As stereo typically in action films they use dangerous surroundings and location to build up tension to their audience, also this setting implies mystery and it looks run down and graffiti which could suggest that it isn’t a nice setting and bad things are to come.

Decision of our title for our Opening sequnce for the main task

Not long ago,me and my group collaborated to design fonts for our title of our opening sequence which is going to be called ‘Red Bullet’ we used the website dafont.com to create our font. However today, my group and I came together to come to the conclusion on a title/name for our opening sequence in order to discuss what type of name we was going to call our opening sequence we used our questionnaires which were filled in earlier in the week. We decided to use  our questionnaires to decide the title of our opening sequence by using a tally chart to add up who voted which to conclude which was the most popular, it was a tie vote between our title being either short and simple or conventional. So Jess suggested  it would be a good idea to make our title both conventional and short and simple, me and Beth agreed. Therefore, we then produced a mind map of all the action conventional words we could think of, then added the word either love or heart to them, but unfortunately most of the ideas we suggested had already been taken. Finally, we came to a final four which were  Crimson Robbery, Red Bullet, Fight for Devotion or Behind Devotion, we all came to the agreement that Red Bullet was most suitable. This is because in our opening sequence/film we are going to include action with a sub genre Romance, we believe that it is suitable as the 'red' connotes love more often than not although it could also suggest blood and fighting, and the the word 'bullet' implies violence.

Sub-Genre Romance

We have decided as a group to have romance as our sub-genre the reason for this is we believe it will help to widen our audience in order to make the best opening sequence we possibly can. We also believe it is the right idea/choice to add romance sub-genre as we feel we enjoy and know enough about romance to be able to include the genre and make it effective. Additionally I really enjoy watching action films with a hint of romance as I believe it makes the audience intrigued and widen the audience. This is because stereo typically women love romantic films therefore this may lead them to watch action films as they are watching something they enjoy with something a little different to what they usually watch. Furthermore, a sub-genre such as romance can add that little bit more excitement to a opening sequence as it may lead the audience to think the film could end in many ways therefore they become more intrigued and want to carry and watch the rest of the film.
For example: Focus

This film is an action film with a sub-genre of romance it starts off when will smith who plays the actor of Nicky Spurgeon is in a night club and spots Jess Barrett and they then pretends they've been caught by her jealous husband. Nicky advises them never to lose focus when faced with unexpected situations. Jess finds him in another nightclub a few days later and convinces Nicky to become her mentor. Nicky tells her about how his father, a con man named Bucky Spurgeon, was forced to shoot his grandfather when a con went wrong.

Throughout the film there is moments which intrigue the audience even more because if it’s not Smith blowing up or seeking for revenge in some way, we are intrigued via Nicky and Jess becoming a couple as they reunite on a couple of occasions. This film is very clever at engaging the audience because as well as being an action film it does have a narrative to it which is very intense at time which keeps the audience intrigued and want to carry on watching more and more. Also, this film is very intense because it includes Nicky at 5 times having to hide away from people and spying so this engages the audience as it makes them wonder if he will get caught and/or what will happen, this is important and key to add as it implies tension for audience so they don’t get bored. By adding a sub-genre romance makes it even more engaging because it makes the audience wonder if Jess with get caught and /or if she gets lost or caught what would happen and how the plan would then work. By adding a sub-genre romance also implies that the main character on his case Will Smith who is seen to be the dominant character as he is shown to take power which is firstly and immediately evident in the picture of the advertisement of the film as he is in front of jess to suggest his power and his hierarchy over Jess,. However, by Smith having Jess by his side implies she is his companionship therefore he might not be as powerful as we all think, Overall, I belive it is more effective and important to include a sub genre as it widens the adueince which has been evident with the findings of audience’s across this film and also it creates even more tension in the film which will engage the audience.

I personally really enjoy this film; therefore I think it is important we add action genre with a sub-genre of romance to our opening sequence. I believe it is important to add a genre which you are interested in especially what you enjoy watching as you will pick up key ideas whilst enjoying leisure time.

Evaluation of Preliminary Task

As a group we feel we have planned effectively and worked well as a team, the reason for this is we have collaborated together on a number of occasions to expand and explore new ideas our own preliminary openings sequence along the way.  By making our opening sequence effective we followed our storyboard step by step to make sure we were including everything we had planned previously.

However, we did picked up on a few faults along the way but we did correct ourselves shortly after, for example, we filmed some of our opening sequence portrait when it should have been landscape to fill the whole screen when coming together and putting it all together. Also, we realised we had filmed things differently than  how we planned on our  storyboard so we again shortly after corrected ourselves and filmed again in the way we planned to do on the storyboard.

We included a shot/reverse shot, match on action and the 180 degree rule we decided to add those three areas specially as we believe it’s what makes an effective opening sequence and shows what skills we can use and how we go about exploring then. The shot/reserve shot was used in our preliminary task when the camera was a close up on Jess’ face and then switched the phone and so on, we believe this is effective to include as it allows the audience to feel a sense of anxiety- as what will happen next- which will hopefully intrigue them.

Also, the 180 degree rule was used when Jess and I were having a conversation after I had walked in and sat down opposite Jess. We believe 180 degree rule is effective as it allows the audience to have a clear indication of the characters emotions and how they are feeling which intrigues the audience.

This leads on to match on action shot was used when jess rang through the door from sitting down and having a conversation with me.

When putting the filming together into one short opening sequence, Beth, Jess and I came together and worked on the Macs which allowed us to access Final Cut Pro. As we are still learning how to use Final Cut Pro, we are still expanding on our knowledge on how to use it correctly which will hopefully  which will make us quicker and more efficient when editing in the future as we are practising along the way. Once, we had collaborated all the individual filming into an order which matched to our storyboard order, we added transitions and sound effects which was interesting to do so as we were expanding our ideas on what sound effects to use as we explored all the different types of sound effects which we were accessible on Final Mac Pro.

Then, we all watched the opening sequence we had filmed and edited to use how ad if it needed to be improved in any particular way. We thought this was an effective way of editing as it allowed us to acknowledge what we thought was good and what we thought wasn't so good, for example, we decided we didn't like some transitions we used so we took then out as we decided to looked more effective without.

However, I do believe our opening sequence would have been more effective if we used both a male and a female this is because it may lead to a wider audience or people may perceive the filming differently if we included a male and a female. Also, in the future I think it would be more effective if we used more than one use of costumes for each character and different settings as it portrays our genre which is action, by including a number of settings in the opening sequence by using match on action shot could help to make audiences aware immediately that our opening sequence is an action genre.

Additionally I believe that OCR require AS media students to make a preliminary task and add evaluation ect because it allows us especially myself to become more familiar with filming and not only that but getting involved and aswell as being told about different media techniques actually setting out there ourselves and doing them ourselves. I believe this is a very effective way of learning as it helps pick upon skills along the way. Therefore in the long run I believe this will benefits all in the main task.

Openings Sequence - Preliminary Task

Storyboarding - Preliminary Task

Recently my group and I collaborated together to create a story board for our preliminary task, whilst collaborating we decided to add action/adventure in our opening sequence. During coming together as a group and discussing ideas we decided to add all different varieties of shot types and transition's that we could include. We thought it was appropriate to relate our preliminary task to our additional main task, this is because we thought it was key to explore and expand on our knowledge towards action films.

So, firstly we came together will all of our individual ideas to collaborate them all together so at least some point of the opening sequence our was an own individual idea was included. At that time, we discussed it would be a good idea to add a character running in the opening sequence - which was a member of our team Jess, who was the main character. This is because we believe it is important to make sure we reinforce what our man task is going to be about, which is action. Throughout, the discussion we was thinking of different shot types which causes tension which would hopefully engage our audience which is 12 years old and above. For example a close up shot is effective as it portrays fear, this is important to include as it only focuses on the characters face therefore the audience have no choice but to look at the character's face and be led in by there emotion.

Additionally, we decided to include a range of settings and transitions such as the character sitting down in a classroom - which again was a member of our group Jess -  in silence to the character running out and opening a door using the use of a match on action shot. We also agreed that the use of 180 degree rule would be effective this is because it reinforces the characters emotions during a discussion - the conversation was between myself and Jess, this can help to make the audience feel involved within the opening sequence. Whilst using a variety of shot types we more often than not included close up or wide shot which is added as it portrays the characters emotions and how they react to certain things , especially in conversations.

Once, we began filming we looked closely at our storyboard to ensure we added very key detail as possible, as we went along and filmed we picked up on new ideas and shot types. So we added our additional ideas along the way, I believe it is important to add new ideas along the way as it shows you are expanding and exploring on your knowledge on action films and what to add towards them. I find creating the preliminary task very useful and beneficial this is because I believe it is helping we acknowledge what I need to work on and what I have now understood - its also a fun and productive way of learning new ideas.

Overall, I believe as a group we have improved and acknowledged new skills and ideas since creating our first video which was the kit kat chunky video. I personally, believe that creating this second opening sequence has allowed me to improved and become familiar with more media terms and terminology in order to create the best possible opening sequence in the near future. I hope each time I create aa small video such as an opening sequence I improve each time and begin to see the improvements whilst progressing.

Decission on certification of our opening sequence

As a group we have decided that our film/opening sequence will be a 12, firstly the difference between a 12 and a 12A is a 12A requires an adult to accompany any child under 12 seeing a 12A film at the cinema, whereas a 12 rating film does not require an adult. This is because in a 12 rating film you are allowed to include strong language as the BBFC's Guidelines state that strong language (e.g. 'f***') may be passed at 12 or 12A, depending on the manner in which it is used, who is using the language. But you must ensure discrimination is involved as the BBFC states any discriminatory language or behaviour will not be authorised by the work as a whole, aggressive discriminatory language (for example homophobic or racist terms) is unlikely to be passed at 12 unless it is clearly condemned. Also, sex may be briefly and discreetly portrayed at 12A or 12, verbal sex references should not go beyond what is suitable for young teenagers. Furthermore, sex and sex references must be treated the same irrespective of sexuality. Also, dangerous behaviour (for example hanging and suicide) may be present in 12A or 12 works but will not dwell on detail which could be copied or present those activities in a manner that children are likely to copy, anti-social behaviour should not be endorsed, there may be infrequent sight of drugs misuse in a 12A or a 12 but the portrayal should not be glamorised. Additionally action sequences and weapons may be present at 12A or 12, and there may be long fight scenes or similar. Weapons which might be easily accessible to 12 year olds (such as knives) should not be exaggerated in 12A and 12 works.

Therefore, to ensure we involve all of the above we will make sure we understand there is everything to know about 12 rating films. We will do that by researching all different types of BBFC ratings and compare them all to a 12 rating in order to understand what is allowed and what is not allowed to be included in a 12 rating film. Also, this will help maximise our knowledge on different ratings including the one we have chosen which is a 12 so in the future we will be more advanced at choosing and gathering the research for our BBFC rating of what is required of us next within the future in exploring our skills.

Analysis of The Matrix opening sequence

Firstly, by introducing audiences to film by a dialogue suggest mystery as there is no proof of who is speaking and why they are speaking. Therefore, this immediately intrigues the audience to question ‘why’ they are introduced with numbers on screen which would be stereotypically used in a spy film. Linking back to dialogue the tone of voice begins to change, this intrigues the audience as it suggests everything is not as it seems and something is going to be relieved.

The non-digetic sounds such as the background music is used after the dialogue has finished suggesting drama and mystery as its very; intense, sci-fi and dramatic, helping to draw the audience in. The music also helps to build up tension to prepare the audience for what’s to come which may help to make them feel involved/apart of the film therefore they will feel guided along with the narrative and want to carry on watching.

As the background music begins to slow down and be less intense we are introduced to what is implied to be an important character. This is because characters who are involved in close up shots are seen to be significant as it helps the audience to be feel/see the character’s emotions. This is also important as its not only the first person we see in this opening sequence it is also the first prompt we see to suggest violence – the gun. This may shock the audience as they are so led on by the music to expect something else such as a dramatic movement.
As the background music begins to fade we are led away from the close up shot creating it to be a wide shot with artificial lighting used such as torches and spotlight on the man with the gun. This may draw the audience to feel excitement as to what is to happen next as they know violence is about to occur as the gun stereotypically and most often than not suggests violence. On the other hand, the gun can also suggest power and strength as it could also be used as a guard if you like, to help the man with the gun as it may make him feel more powerful and more masculine. But in this wide shot it is shown the man is not alone as he is joined with other men with torches, this also draws the audience in as makes them think ‘who are they’.
As the camera angle begins to zoom into the other men it appears they are police officers, which may change many audiences perspective on what’s going to happen. This may intrigue the audience as they have predicted the men with the guns are the ‘bad guys’ this is because stereotypically the man who is usually introduced with a prompt such as a gun is stereotypically after someone or seeking revenge in many action opening sequences. Therefore this suggest this film is trying to avoid predictability although some predictability is good as it allows audiences to have a range of genres to watch as that’s how genres are mostly categorized.
The setting of the opening sequence is very dark and gloomy which could foreshadow death or violence as the connotation of black represents death. Therefore, audiences are informed that is film is action also encouraged with other hints such as prompts. It is clear both natural and artificial lighting is used within this opening sequence as the natural lighting sets a dull tone to the opening sequence. However, the artificial lighting such as the torches could suggest to the audience that this action film isn't going to be as they seem but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Also, it is implied this place where they are is old therefore, this could suggest for whatever reason that the police are there it isn't safe and they aren't meant to be there which sets a mysterious tone.

The use of non digetic sounds such as door creeping and gun firing suggests violence which builds up tension or in some circumstances excitement for the audience as they are intrigued to find out to see what happens next. We are shown by this wide shot of a women dressed in black sat in a chair in darkness is unusual therefore this once again draws the audience in to want to know ‘why’. This wide shot is effective as by showing the women’s surroundings suggests this film it’s trying to make a bond/connection with the audience as they want the audience to become familiar within the surroundings of the film. Also by the women being dressed in black is effective as the colour black connotes death, therefore, this may get the audience to think if her costume is foreshadowing her death or another’s throughout the film.

Again, using a close up shot of the women’s face could also suggest her importance within the film and to reinforce her emotions towards what is to come. This can help the audience to establish who’s who, especially with all the police men with their torches on her could imply a spot light which may encourage towards the audience believing she is a significant character as all eyes are on her.

Analysis of James Bond Skyfall opening sequence

We are instantly informed in the first few seconds that this opening scene is an action film we are shown this by Bond drowning whilst being led into hole as this portrays he could be being led to violence which may end in death. Also, by the use of prompts such as the cardboard cut out of Bond which red coming of him which indicates blood as red connotes action and violence.

The sharp contrast of transition’s used, between the wide shot into a close up onto the hole in the cardboard cut-out of Bond then becomes a close up of the women under the sea. This portrays there is going to be sharp contrasts within the film including behavior and scenes. By the use of a Bond girl undressed under the water looking directly at the camera suggest she isn’t afraid to hide anything. Also suggests she is very confident as she glares into the camera which intrigues the audience to want to know ‘why’ as its usual to see people underwater in an opening scene so immediately this gets the audience thinking as they want to know ‘why’ she is there and ‘how’ she is there.

Similarly, the prompts used imply violence such as guns and swords, as stereotypically they are used in action films for violence when fighting or killing another person. The special effects used to portray the prompts are special lighting such as article lighting as the bright light is shining down onto the prompts it wants to focus in on in this case the guns and swords.

Likewise, Bond is portrayed to be the heroic character as he is portrayed the most throughout the opening sequence and is shown to be the dominant mysterious character we are shown this by Bond’s costume such as a suit whilst being contrasted with prompts used as it’s not stereotypically what you would assemble together. The use of a big close up of Bonds eyes suggest mystery as it suggests he may have something to hide as he isn’t showing his whole face, which may get the audience thinking ‘why’ which intrigues them in the first minute of the opening sequence.

Linking back to the use of special effects such as lighting, both article and natural is use in this wide shot as Bond is shown to be fearful as he has a gun in his hand whilst circling which implies he need the gun to feel powerful and have more strength. Artificial lighting is used as there is a very bright light shining down towards Bond which could suggest weakness of Bond as he is being over powered by lighting. The natural lighting used is the shadow of Bond by using 3 shadows of characters with their hands up could however suggest his power implying he can take anyone on and isn’t afraid to be on his own against others.

Additionally, in the sharp contrast of editing/transitions Bond is shown to be alone under the water with his Bond girls. However, this all changes when a wide shot is shown of a shadow appealing as a men with a gun which suggests violence as it’s a stereotypically violent prompt. Also, this wide shot could suggest Bond is not alone this may intrigue the audience as they may be drawn in to what to know who else is there with him. Likewise, as this shadow of a male pointing at the camera shows he is not afraid therefore this may suggest he is confident and will take Bond on.

The colour red connotes blood and death therefore this is effective as it implies to the audience that this films is going to involve violence and it could also imply death. We know this by the image of the red smoke which indicate blood cells implying this film is going to get your adrenaline high and your heart beating fast. Also, by the image of a red skull implies death as it could foreshadow many deaths within the film, which also implies violence.

Contrasted, with a wide shot of fireballs suggests violence as the connotation of fire is violence and harm. Therefore the audience are informed within the first few minutes of the opening sequence that this film is an action film by the hints such as prompts and images. Also, when the camera zooms into the fireballs they are James Bond cut outs on fire which we saw earlier on in the opening sequence floating under the sea. This is effective as it implies to the audience that there is going to be sharp contrasts between plot lines and characters which will intrigue action genre target audiences.

By the use of quick transitions including Bond girls dancing in colour format seems all happy however there is then a sharp contrast between colours as they are then shown in black and white. This also suggests violence as the connotation of white suggests fear in relation with black which suggest death and pain. This is also hinted as an images of a gun, swords – in a cross shape- appears to again suggest violence and that bad things/consequences are to come such as death.  Also the black and white wide shot of a grave guard could foreshadow the death/murders of what is to come as they is many graves in the grave guard suggesting more than one is going to die.

Again the shot of Bond eye close up is portrayed this is used as it distinguishes to the audience that he is the main character. By using a close up in this matter it implies his emotion and fear in his eyes of whats to come which may help to intrigue the audience., in the first few minutes of the opening sequence as they have already witnessed a lot of different animations. This may suggest this plot line is different to others as it includes a variety of different prompts and plots. As the camera confuses in on Bonds eyes this may make the audience feel unaware of Bonds surroundings and begin to make then question why he is shown in that way and what is his importance. Therefore this intrigues the audience as it will make them want to know and find out what his importance really is.

Overall, hints are being thrown everywhere that this is an action film such as the prompts used and the soundtrack used. The soundtrack used is effective as the words link to what is happening within the opening sequence, it is also effective as the music becomes dramatic at stages which could suggests this film is going to be like a roller-coaster which implies audience’s need to hold on and watch as they won’t get bored.
