The connation’s of a smart looking protagonist especially a male is that they are going to be a gentlemen for example James Bond he is a gentlemen as he always as a lady yet he always fights his way out of situations. Also, a smart female protagonist connotes intelligence and they usually play a role of a woman who is very intellectual and usually helps the meal protagonist’s especially in action films to save the day. Therefore, smart protagonists are usually the ones who save the day and are known as the ‘goody’ however, films that are unpredictable and have a twist may not always necessarily be the smart protagonists saving the day.

On the other hand rough looking protagonists are usually connoted in a light where they are either poor or in need of help. This is because rough looking protagonist are more often than not portrayed to be living on the streets or in some kind of difficult situation where they are alone and fight themselves out of the situation alone. This contrasts with smart protagonists who are usually stereotyped to have more than an companionship with one person to help when in need of help; however it can twist as some narratives do have a twist.

An  example of a narrative with a twist is a character starts of as a smart protagonists and then becomes a rough look pragmatists is in south paw the main character who is a boxer starts off with everything, the dream house, cars, family, the lot. But then he loses it due to his wife dying and then he has his daughter took off him it end very badly as he ends up with nothing. This is an example of a unpredictable story line with a twist as more often than not boxing type films are the other way round as usually the boxer starts off with nothing more often than not living on the streets and then becomes wealthier as they progress new skills are fights and it usually ends with a happy ending.

An example of female representations in action genre films: 'Salt'
The main character who is known as Angelia Jolie who is first portrayed as mysterious as she is shown as she has been involved in a fight with her black hair and dark clothes. This kind of clothing can suggest both power and weakness as black connotes a very powerful colour that also portrays one of class elegance and wealth. But in this case the black could suggest weakness of the character because she is covered in dust suggesting she has been in trouble implying she is weak which is the stereotype of females in action genre films specially.

As the film goes on Jolie is shown to change in character as she then changes her hair colour to blonde which implies she is now sexualised as she is seen to wear red lipstick, which connotes a powerful emotion of passion, lust, sex, energy, blood and war. Which is stereotypically the norm within action films as the women used are usually dressed provocative and sexualised,  It is a noticeable colour that is often used on caution and warning signs. It is often associated with stop or "beware". Therefore, this could suggest this female character is portrayed to have power and strength unlike most action genre films which suggests this film has used the final girl theory.
